Overview & Heritage
In 1966, PING’s founder Karsten Solheim sketched what became the iconic Anser putter design — a significant leap in putter design.
To commemorate its 50-year legacy, PING released this special “50th Anniversary” model in 2016: sand-cast using the original molds (one by Karsten, one by his son Allan), assembled with components supplied in 1966, and each sole hand-ground by PING’s CEO, John Solheim.
Total production: 1,550 right-handed units — 775 from Karsten’s mold (“K” serial) and 775 from Allan’s mold (“A” serial).
This example, serial #310 in the Karsten mold series, represents a rare collectible piece of golf-club history.
Key Features & Specifications
-
Head Material & Construction: High-tensile manganese bronze cast in the same foundry used in the original Anser production, using the original Karsten mold.
-
Sole & Finish: Each putter’s sole was hand-ground by John Solheim, then lightly tumbled and aged to replicate original craftsmanship from 1966.
-
Weights & Components: Tungsten heel and toe weights inserted for modern performance stability while retaining classic look.
-
Shaft & Grip: Uses the original-style high-step shaft from True Temper, and the PP58 grip from Golf Pride (both vendors used in the 1966 model). Even the grip tape is supplied by 3M — the same supplier as the original.
-
Presentation Package: Comes with an engraved certificate of authenticity signed by John Solheim, a leather headcover, and a dedicated presentation box.
Collector Significance
-
Scarcity: With only 775 units made in the “K” Karsten mold series (for right-hand), this particular serial number (#310) falls well within a low-volume collectible run.
-
Heritage & Craftmanship: The collection celebrates half a century of one of the most recognised putter designs in golf history. The hand-crafted touches (hand grinding, original components) elevate its value for collectors.
-
Condition & Completeness: For maximum value, presence of original box, cover, COA, unaltered head and original shaft/ grip are important. Any modification (re-grip, refinishing) may reduce collector value.
-
Playability vs Display: While fully functional as a putter, many owners prefer to retain it as a display piece due to its collectible status
